North Florida is filled with New Jersey transplants who have brought their bagel and pizza-making magic down South for us to enjoy
Before moving to Saint Augustine, I had spent most of my life as a yankee in New Jersey. Yes, Jersey is way too crowded now and taxes are sky-high, but when it comes to comfort foods like pizza and bagels they make some of the best in the country. For months after moving here, I would fantasize about KC’s Bagels on Route 23 in Pompton Plains. Fantastic bagels. Just the right combination of crispy and chewy.
Then one day I wandered into Everything Bagel in Saint Augustine, and suddenly I was home again.
How well I remember the first time my kids and I walked into Everything Bagel. The placed was packed with breakfast eaters, and the tantalizing scents of poppy seeds, cinnamon and warm bread filled the air. I took one of those highly-satisfying deep breaths you see in the movies, and just sucked it all in. I turned to my son Calvin and remarked how much like a Jersey bagel shop this was. Calvin and Megan immediately agreed, and made their selection.
Everything Bagel opened in June of 2009. Owner Lorelei Soule is another yankee transplant from New Jersey who wanted to bring her love for food south to Saint Augustine. And they are more than just bagels, much more. EB does a full line up of hot and cold breakfast and lunch sandwiches, a full line of gourmet coffees, as well as catering for corporate events.
Here’s a funny story for you: Shortly after we started becoming “regulars” at Everything Bagel, the woman behind the counter who I later would found out was the owner, started looking familiar to me. I am not very good with names but am excellent with faces. Exactly what you might expect from a graphic artist, right? So when I was sure I knew her from somewhere, I asked her one day if perhaps we didn’t know each other. As it turned out, we had gone to high school together at De Paul in Wayne, NJ, albeit 2 years apart. Talk about a small world!
Everything Bagel is not just a good bagel, they are a great bagel. On top of that, the store is neat, clean and the staff super-friendly and accommodating. They have plenty of on-site parking, and open 6 days a week with Monday being their day off.
Stop in and say hello to Lori and the gang, and tell them you want a Jersey-style bagel, piping-hot and delicious. And even if you’ve never been to New Jersey, you can still experience what the best bagel in Saint Augustine tastes like.
I guarantee it.
